The Buff Coloured Tarmac Project

This technically demanding buff-coloured tarmac project in Bath presented a challenge - culminating in a beautifully finished surface and three delighted clients.

The team had to be on top form to undertake this Buff coloured tarmac project.

This exstensive 1,170sq.M area encompasses 3 properties that all link together, which made the job more difficult. The existing surface consisted of a base layer of tarmac covered with 56 tonnes of loose 10mm flint gravel. After 10 years of treading the gravel into their properties and seeing the gravel migrate onto the main road, the clients had had enough. We set to work removing the gravel with the digger, road sweeper and good old fashioned shovels and brushes. We fixed a new line of reclaimed pennant kerbs. These kerbs are 450mm deep but you can only see the top 30mm creating the boundary line. All the existing dips and troughs are filled with a 10mm dense warring course tarmac. The exterior of the kerb line is made good with black tarmac. We mechanically applied a glossy black bitumen glue over the site-this allows the top 30mm layer of Buff tarmac to adhere well.

We began at the very rear and worked our way forward. The weather was warm and dry- ideal conditions to allow the material to stay pliable a little longer. You still have to work fast though-only truly experienced teams with 3 x 50+ year olds and a fit team of young men can successfully install this material.

The finished results are truly striking, showcasing a refined visual elegance. Over the coming months, the surface will undergo natural oxidation, gradually lightening in tone and enhancing its character. Seamlessly uniting all areas of the properties, the surface creates a cohesive and harmonious flow.
